Cross Hall was erected to commemorate Lucy A. Cross (1839-1927), a graduate of Oberlin College and faculty member at Wellesley College, who relocated to Florida in the late1800s to establish a private school in Daytona. It was her inspiration that led to the founding of Rollins College. Even though the original purpose of the building was for the sciences, it was used instead as a women’s dormitory and sorority house. Today it houses the sorority Alpha Omicron Pi. With Kiehnel and Elliot as the architects and Harry C. Cone as its contractor, the building cost approximately $57,000 when constructed. It was dedicated on February 20, 1937, with four other dormitories, five months after construction was completed. In 1972, the building was renovated with the installation of smoke and fire detectors, air conditioning, and stairwells that complied with adopted codes. New windows were added in 1986. Standing three stories tall and covering 6,583 square feet, it houses twenty-three students. |
