Cornell Campus Center

The Cornell Campus Center traces its origin to October 19, 1996, when The Campaign For Rollins program was initiated. At a cost of nearly $8.25 millions, the new building provides dining facilities along with socializing areas for the Rollins community. The new Cornell Campus Center was built on the pre-existing foundation of Skillman Hall, which served as Rollins’ main dining venue for many years. The Cornell Campus Center was designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbot, constructed by Walker & Company, and landscaped by Carol R. Johnson Associates of Cambridge, Massachusetts.  The building was named for the two lead contributors, George Cornell (’35 ’85H) and his wife Harriet Cornell (’35HAL ’90H), who donated $3 million for the construction. Thomas P. Johnson (’34 ’82H) also played a significant role in the construction of the Cornell Campus Center, through his $2 million gift to the College.

The building houses the C-Store, the Grille, and the cafeteria. In addition to the state-of-art dining facilities, the Center contains an information desk, conference rooms, an e-mail counter, and a lounge area for students. On the second floor, the Bierbach and Reed Conference room provides a quite area for faculty and student organization gatherings. Additionally, the Warden Dining Room, which is located in the corner of the second floor, serves as a conference and dinning space for faculty and staff. Opposite to Warden is the Rice President’s Dining Room, which is mainly used by the college administration for special occasions. Dave’s DownUnder is located on the underground floor of Cornell Campus Center. It can be transformed into a lecture-style room with 185 chairs facing the stage or into a coffeehouse with 114 stack chairs at round tables. Furthermore, some offices for student activities offices are located inside the Cornell Campus Center. Outside the Dave’s DownUnder, the Edgar A. Swindle Lakeside Patio contains comfortable seats and tables for student gatherings. In perfect harmony with the adjacent structures, the tile roof, outdoor plazas, patios and terraces of the Cornell Student Center bring a Spanish-Mediterranean feeling to Rollins campus.
