Strong Hall

Strong Hall was built in 1939, which coincided with Hamilton Holt’s 15th year as president of Rollins. The $60,000 hall was the result of the gift of Mrs. Henry Alvah Strong (1864-1950) of Washington, D.C. In addition to helping finance the construction of the building, Mrs. Strong had also sponsored numerous students to obtain a college education at Rollins.

Designed by Kiehnel and Elliot of Miami, the architectural outlook of the 6,466-square-foot building is Mediterranean in appearance, similar to the architecture of the four surrounding dormitory buildings. Strong Hall is constructed around a large patio, in the center of which the architects sited a terrazzo dance floor and a small fountain. With a capacity of twenty-two students, the hall contains a large living room with a small kitchen, guest room, small library, and lounge. The two-story building sits under a tiled roof, which extends according to the different elevations of the building. The interior decoration was provided by E. Tadd Little & Son, who made use of a great variety of colors. The building was renovated in 1972. Strong Hall currently houses the College’s residential fraternity Alpha Tau Omega.
