Lake Virginia Boathouse

The 1904 Lake Virginia Boathouse

The dedication ceremony for the original Lake Virginia Boathouse took place on April 26th, 1904. At a cost of $750 as estimated by Blackman in 1905, the Boathouse was funded by Mrs. Esther R. Holmes of Monson, Massachusetts. The long wood-structure building with an inclining roof and latticework toward the lake was used for canoeing and boating by Rollins students over several decades. The building was destroyed by Hurricane Donna in September 1960 and entirely rebuilt in the summer of 1961. The relatively modern grey building was equipped with a floating dock and storage space for small sailing craft. While providing docking space for ski boats, it also contained the offices for the Director of Aquatic Sports along with the dressing rooms for students.
