Harold and Ted Alfond Sports Center |
Sketch |
The construction of the Harold έ Ted Alfond Sports Center began in 1999 and was completed in 2001. The new gymnasium incorporated the old Enyart-Alumni Field House, which was built in 1968, and nearly doubled its size in the process, bringing it to 77,800 square feet. The new center, which cost $11.3 million to construct, replaces the old facility that could no longer provide all the services needed. The Alfond Sports Center contains classrooms and many offices as well as two major courts, Warden Arena on the first floor and McKean Gymnasium on the second floor, both equipped to play basketball and volleyball. Adjacent to the upstairs court, rests the Tar Hall of Fame room, provides views of both the downstairs court and Lake Virginia. Also, next to one of the courts is a raised area that contains a batting cage so one could practice even if it was of poor weather outside. A new workout area is also added to the building, containing state-of-art training machines and free weights. In addition, there is a concession stand that provides smoothies, drinks and power bars. |

The building has sufficient space to hold large events. Many large ceremonies take place in the Warden Arena, including the commencements and the installation of the president. In addition, when popular music artists come to Rollins, they usually perform there. During the summer months the complex also hosts many camps for local children, making the Alfond Sports Center a space not just for the students of Rollins College, but also for the community at large. |
