Alfond Pool Construction in 1972 |
Beginning of work |
The Alfond Swimming Pool is located in south of the Cornell Campus Center, adjacent to Lake Virginia. Dedicated on April 29, 1973, the main sponsor of the pool was the Alfond family, whose gifts also enabled the construction of Rollins’ Sports Center and boathouse, among others. In addition, Dart Industries, Delavan, and STA-Rite Products were credited for their donations of water filtration system and pool equipment. |

Containing nine lanes for swimming competitions, the heated pool is four feet deep at the shallow end and thirteen feet at its deep end. In addition, there are two 3-meter and two l-meter Maxi-Flex diving boards with fulcrums and an OMEGA timing system. The pool area originally had 450 permanent bleacher seats overlooking the water; the bleachers were removed during construction of the Cornell Campus Center to assure an uninterrupted view of the lake. Throughout the years the pool has not only served the needs of Rollins students, faculty, and staff, but also the Winter Park community at large. The Blue Dolphins swimming team of the Winter Park High School used the pool facilities for training needs for a number of years. |
