Dining Hall II |
|
During the summer of 1919, less than one year after a fire destroyed the original Dinning Hall, Rollins built a new one on the very spot where the previous building stood. In 1935, President Hamilton Holt offered a $25 award to any students who could develop the best plan for decorating the Dining Hall II, now referred to as the Beanery. The winning students, Helen Jackson (’36) and Isobel Moberly, came up with a Monkey Room theme. It contained many satirical pictures of bugs and animals engaging in fun Floridian acts such as playing golf. The 11,675-square foot building served the Rollins community until 1958, when the Rose Skillman Hall was constructed, which was later converted into the Cornell Student Center. The old dining structure then served the art department as art studios until May 5, 1977, when it was demolished. |
